So our friend Jeremy has created this special stats sheets for the first 3 matches of the ongoing 2011 FIVB World Cup. Again, it takes so much talent and patience to create something like this. Thank you Jeremy!
Top Players on a Net Positive Points Per set Average basis
1. Destinee Hooker, USA, 4.44
2. Carolina Costagrande, Italy, 3.92
3. Milena Rasic, Serbia, 3.43
Top Players on a Net Positive Points Total
1. Costagrande, Italy, 58-11=47
2. Junjing Yang, China (44-4) and Hooker, USA, (51-11), 40
3. Saori Kimura, Japan, (55-19)=36
Most Positive Points
1. Costagrande, Italy, 58
2. Kimura, Japan, 55
3. Hooker, USA, 51
4. Ruoqi Hui, China and Bethania de la Cruz de Pena, Dominican Republic, 50
Most Negative Points Total
1. Mercy Moin, Kenya, -31
2. Yimei Wang, China, -26
3. Faiza Tsabet, Algeria, -24
Player Contribution to Set Wins
This takes into account the number of set wins divided by the average net positive points through the first three matches for each team.
Also if a player did not play in all of the teams’ sets, this is also taken into account.
It is possible to have negative set wins (too many errors) and it is possible for a player to win more sets than their team has set wins (they do well as an individual player, but the rest of team fails).
The closest thing that I can compare it to would be win shares in other sports, but in this case, how many set wins did this player contribute to the teams’ wins.
1. Costagrande, Italy, 2.94 set wins, or almost 1 match win
2. Hooker, USA 2.68
3. Yang, China, 2.56
4. Foluke Akinradewo, USA, 2.08
5. Simona Gioli, Italy, 2.07
So if you look at Italy and the US, 2 players have contribute 5.01 set wins (out of 9 sets, 55.6%) and 4.76 set wins (out of 9 sets, 52.8%) respectively.
Teams must stop these two players on each team to have a chance at beating them.
146 players in total have played in 1 set or more
Only 31 players (21.2%) in all of the matches have contributed 1 set win or more to their teams.
