Russian Volleyball Federation confirmed Vadim Pankov 44-year old coach of Zarechie-Odintsovo, as the head coach of the Russian Women Volleyball National team. Pankov replaced J. Kaprara, the head coach of the last 3 years. Kaprara resigned after Beijing Olympics 2008 where Russian National team had the worst performance in its Olympics history: the team lost in quarter-finals to China.
Pankov is an experienced and successful volleyball coach. This season (2007/2008) he debuted as head coach of Zarechie-Odintsovo and led the team to the double success by winning the Russian Super League and Russian Cup. Before this success he served several years as an assistant to P. Matienko in Zarechie-Odintsovo. In 90's he held position of an assistant coach in N. Karpol's Uralochka. In early 90's, at the beginning of his coaching carrier, he led the Murcia to the championship title in Spanish Super League. Pankov also successfully coached the Russian Junior Volleyball team for several years.

THE LACK OF THE TEAM SPIRIT IS THE MAIN REASON OF THE OLYMPICS FAILURE
Pankov analyzed the performance of Russian Volleyball National on Beijing Olympics.
He agreed with Kaprara that team did not get chance to play the world elite teams in preparation stage and that is one of the reasons of the failure. Russian team was playing some not-so-tough teams while the world best teams where competing for the Grand Prix.
Nevertheless, Kaprara had 3 months right before the Olympics to prepare the team. And he failed to build a team united by a single purpose. As result, in Beijing, Russia had strong individual players but they failed to perform together as a team.

THIS IS A TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT
Pankov said that his current head coaching position is temporary. The term will end right after the Grand Prix European Qualification in Omsk. If Russian team qualifies for the Grand Prix, the Federation might extend the contract with Pankov for another 4 years including the London Olympics. He also said that the Federation has other excellent candidates to the head coach position. He mentioned N. Karpol as one of them.

PANKOV ABOUT THE RUSSIAN NATIONAL TEAM
Pankov said Estes will not join the team for sure. At the same time he hopes that Godina and Sokolova might reconsider the retirement and join the team. He promised that he'll talk with Sokolova in Zarechie and do everything possible to get her back.
Meanwhile these three players will miss the competition in Omsk. Alimova (family business) and Andrushenko (injury) will also stay home. Pankov decided to use more experienced setters Sheshenina and Akulova. That would leave Startseva out.
Pankov saw Safronova in Dinamo lately and was very impressed with her performance. He invited Safronova to join the team. Kaprara replaced Safronova in the Olympic team with Pasynkova. But Pasynkova did not get any significant playing time during the Olympics.
Pankov said his first choice for the team captain would be Sokolova. But since Sokolova is not available, he appointed Sheshenina the captain. Currently he is practicing with 12 players. Gamova will join the team on Sep. 09.
Pankov pointed out that currently Russian team needs good setters and middle blockers. He is not impressed with the setter's performance at Olympics. Without good setters it is hard to compete with the world best teams. So far there are no good setters in Russian Super League. It would require some time to find and to coach good setters.

97年russia也还是隆重推出新人godina，队里保留了artamonova、morozova、tichtchenko、batoukhina、gratcheva等“老”将

现在的russia是比较惨淡，但还有gamova、sheshenina、borisenko、merkulova、safronova

sokolova、godina都30有1了，何苦折腾人家

还不如考虑一下pasynkova实际点

sokolova一到他们球队就得了两个冠军，他当然喜欢SOKOLOVA了。不过还是让她俩休息一年吧，等2010年在出来打世锦赛，现在还是锻炼锻炼新人吧。
